We Hear, But We Don’t Listen

Hearing and listening are two entirely different things.

We may be silent while someone else is speaking, but if we are busy thinking about the next thing WE want to say, we will hear, but not listen to a single thing they say.

Interestingly, we expect them to take the time to listen to our point so that we can convince them to agree with us.

It’s hypocritical to expect them to take the time to listen to what we have to say when we won’t do the same.

First seek to understand, then to be understood.

Do this by focusing on what they have to say with the intent of summarizing it back to them. Continue this back and forth until they have completed discussing their point. Only then should you begin to share your perspective.

If we aren’t taking the time to listen and comprehend their position, how will we learn and understand? Let’s not be so arrogant as to believe we alone have the answer to everything. So value the input from others.
